Reading from the Amplified Bible (AMP) version..

  • "This is the book (the written record, the history) of the generations of [the descendants of] Adam. When God created man, He made him in the likeness of God [not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness]. He created them male and female, and blessed them and named them Mankind at the time they were created." v.1-2
  • "Enoch walked [in habitual fellowship] with God three hundred years after the birth of Methuselah and had other sons and daughters." v.22
  • "And [in reverent fear and obedience] Enoch walked with God; and he was not [found among men], because God took him [away to be home with Him]." v.24
  • "When Lamech was a hundred and eighty-two years old, he became the father of a son. He named him Noah, saying, “This one shall bring us rest and comfort from our work and from the [dreadful] toil of our hands because of the ground which the Lord cursed.” v.28-29

My personal observations and reflections...

  • MADE IN THE LIKENESS OF GOD. I like that the start of this Chapter is a REMINDER of who we are-- and who God is, the Creator who continually blessed His people despite of their failures (sins).
  • I noticed that the names recorded were only of MEN (Husbands, Fathers), whom God considers as the heads (leaders) of their household. I believe this also signifies husbands and wives, being ONE FLESH before God. Thus, only the name of the man is mentioned, it already represents both.
  • It's astounding how long people lived back then! Adam, 930 years, Seth, 912, and the longest was Methuselah, 969 years. No one reached 1000 though, and I was reminded of this again: 2 Peter 3:8 "..with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." How does a 900 years old man looks like? I could only imagine. But this is only earthly life, man will get old and die of a physical death, as the wage/consequence of sin. One day, we will have an eternal life (through His Son Jesus), and we will spend forever with God (which is His original plan).
  • GOD OF ALL GENERATIONS. God keeps track of His people, He is in control! And He has a plan of redemption for all mankind.
  • ENOCH WALKED WITH GOD. I want to stop for a moment, and take this all in and revel in it........ Wow. Enoch got a special mention here because of his intimate relationship and fellowship with God. How does it look like to (closely) walk with God? I'm sure every day, every moment of his life, Enoch was talking to God, praying, just enjoying God's presence instead of doing something else. It must have been hard, living in a sinful world, where other people have completely forgotten and ignored God and His commandments, and were just doing their own thing. Enoch must have been praying for God's salvation, interceding for his fellow men. His life was cut short, not because he died, but because God took him away.. Just wow. I wonder why. Maybe Enoch's mission is already finished, but if you ask me, that is one good way to pass away from this world. One that I would like to happen to me too if I can have a choice.
  • NOAH ("comfort" or "rest"). It's amazing how God led His people in terms of naming their sons (and daughters), which have deeper meanings (or purpose). What Lamech said of Noah's name is like a prophecy and foreshadowing of what's about to come. There is too much evil that was happening, these people endured it for centuries in their lives, but God was about to give a new beginning, for all mankind (exciting!). Who really reminds me of "comfort" or "rest"? Jesus Christ.
Reading the Old Testament feels like riding a rollercoaster for me-- one moment it's down, seems hopeless, then it goes up and becomes hopeful again. But knowing everything is pointing to Jesus (our living hope) and God's ultimate plan of salvation, I know that our hopes are secured!

So ride on! Thank you if you are reading this❤️
